Many business owners consider selling tangible goods (products that need to be shipped) at some point in their business career. It will take a lot of time (and money!) to start selling your physical products.
First, you need to locate suppliers for the products you need. You will have to spend time to evaluate your suppliers. You will also have to invest a considerable amount of capital to buy inventory.
You will also need to store your supplies and inventory. While some business owners are able to repurpose their basement into a warehouse, the vast majority rent a warehouse to store supplies and the inventory for their business.
Even after a product is ordered and you get paid for it, you work is not done. Once an order is placed you need to fill the order and ship products to customers. While some business owners charge the customer for shipping, many others opt to pay for shipping themselves, thus cutting into their profit margins even more.
As you can see, it takes a lot of time and money to set up and run a business that sells physical products. You can avoid many of the problems above by selling e-books instead of physical products. An e-book is a manuscript, usually in a PDF format, that is available for sale online and can be delivered to the customer immediately after the payment is processed. There are quite a few reasons to sell your own e-books; the first and foremost is that it saves you time and money:
- When you sell your own e-books, you do not need any suppliers. You are the author of the e-book, and you are able to write the e-book and create the final product (PDF manuscript) yourself. Since you do not need suppliers, you do not need to invest any money into physical products.
- Since you do not need any physical products, you do not need to store them and pay storage fees. You do not have any inventory - all you need is a single copy of your e-book and shopping cart software.
- E-book orders can be fulfilled automatically. When you sell an e-book, the entire fulfillment process - from taking the order to accepting payment to delivering an e-book to your customer can be done automatically. Having a completely automated order fulfillment system for your e-books frees up a lot of your time for marketing, working with clients and creating other e-books.
As you can see, you do not need to pay for physical products, store inventory or ship orders when you sell e-books. Look into starting to sell e-books for your business. Even if you already sell physical products, you can always add e-books to the mix. For example, if you are selling jewelry, consider creating an e-book for people who want to create jewelry on their own. If you are a gourmet chef, consider creating an e-book of your favorite recipes or an e-book about easy entertaining. The possibilities are endless - get a piece of paper, and start planning your upcoming e-book today!
