Do You Have A Story?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

And, more importantly, is it worth telling? This is what an article on CNN is asking, Everybody has a story — but is it worth telling?.

While the article is specifically about memoirs, I think it applies to other genres as well. As someone who works with authors on self-help and other how-to non-fiction titles, I always recommend to my clients to do research to see if there will be demand for their book/e-book before they actually write it.

That way if you decide to go ahead with your idea, you will see how realistic your projected numbers are, and how much demand there is in the market for your idea.

Use Public Speaking To Get Newsletter Subscribers

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

So you are invited to speak in front of your target market. How do you maximize the results you can get out of this speaking engagement?

You can do that by inviting the people who are attending the presentation to subscribe to your newsletter.

During your presentation, I recommend passing around a sign-up sheet for your newsletter, asking participants for their name/e-mail address and permission to send them your newsletter. To make your offer more valuable, the sign-up sheet should have the information about the gift they will receive when they subscribe to your newsletter.

Don’t have a gift for your new newsletter subscribers? I recommend creating one, as this is one of the best techniques to get more subscribers for your list.

When you get their email addresses, you will be able to keep in touch with them and let them know about your upcoming events, seminars, and products. Doing this is extremely valuable to you as a business owner.

How To Market Your Book Online

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

So you wrote a book, now what? How can you find people who want to buy your book online? Here is how:

- Define the target audience for your book - who are the people who want to buy your book? Who is the target market for your book? Your book is very targeted, so you should be able to pinpoint a very specific group of people who wants the information you are sharing in the book.

- Start a newsletter to collect the email addresses of people who visit your web site. Not everyone is going to buy your book the first time they visit your web site. If you can’t keep in touch with them AFTER they have visited your web site, you have lost them forever.

If you are able to get their email address you will be able to market your book to them for a long time. Plus, if you decide to offer other products based on your book (teleseminars, ebooks, etc) you will be able to use your e-mail list to promote them as well.

- Create a marketing plan for your book. There are lots of things you can do to market your book - article marketing, blogging, search engine optimization, public speaking, etc.

Make sure your plan addresses how to get traffic to your web site, how to turn your traffic into leads and how to turn your leads into buyers.

The Best Technique To Sell More Books And Ebooks

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Many people have asked me - what is the best marketing technique to use to sell more books? If I start blogging, will I sell more books next week? Will article marketing sell 100 more copies of my ebooks?

Truth is, no marketing technique - blogging, search engine optimization, article marketing or any other one - will increase your sales immediately.

What you need to find out is how a particular marketing technique will fit into your overall marketing plan.

Many marketing techniques are designed to bring people interested in what you do to your web site. However, those techniques don’t account for what happens AFTER you bring them to your web site.

If you do absolutely nothing in addition to blogging, people will come to your blog, read it, linger for a bit and leave. This is because there will not be any incentive for them to stick around.

People are bombarded with tons of marketing messages every day. Many of your blog visitors will forget about your blog and its address two minutes after they leave it.

Therefore, it is imperative to make sure that you can collect the e-mail addresses of people who visit your blog. If you can get their e-mail address, you will be able to e-mail them, market to them, and sell your books to them long after they have visited your blog.

You should do this with every marketing technique you use - figure out how to use it to add people to your list, so that you can continue to market to them long after they have visited your web site.

Next week I am teaching a free teleseminar, 5 Steps To Selling More Copies Of Your Book Or Ebook.
I will be talking about creating a marketing plan to promote your book online and get more sales. You can register for the teleseminar FREE at http://www.avocadoconsulting.com/books.html

What Do You Like To Do In The Summer?

Friday, June 15th, 2007

What are your favorite things to do in the summer? I just love walking around the city in sunny weather, when the temperature is in low 70s Fahrenheit (low 20s Celsius). The weather is just warm enough, and there is a light breeze coming from the lake - those are perfect Chicago days!

This past weekend I was in luck - it was nice and sunny, with the temperatures hovering around 72F. We spent almost the whole day outside! We walked around the city, went to my favorite sushi spot and went to the lake.

We also dropped by a Book Fair. I really enjoyed browsing books, and there were lots of cookbooks to see. I networked and made contacts at a local writing organization. I also watched a few authors speak about their books and signing autographs. Seeing them made my goal for writing a book firmer - I can’t wait to finish it!

How To Monetize Your Knowledge

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Are you an expert in something? Do you want to share this something with others and get paid for it?

If you do, you should create and sell information products!
To get started, I recommend publishing the newsletter, and making it available to everyone. Use your newsletter to get together a large group of people, who are interested in your expertise and your products. You should use your newsletter to promote your expertise through your articles, as well as to sell your products.

In order to monetize your knowledge you need to package your knowledge into information products. Information products are just what it sounds - they are products, filled with information, that you can sell online.

There is a ton of information products you can create to sell in your newsletter and on your web site:

- Ebooks.

- Special reports.

- Teleseminars, seminars, classes.

- Audio recordings.

- A membership web site.

All of these products need to be created once, and then you can sell them again
and again to generate profits - how cool is that?

I discuss the exact process of monetizing knowledge through creation and selling
of information products in my Complete Step By Step Information Products Guide.

Work Less, Make More Money

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Hi,

Do you want to work less, while making more money?

Did you start it to own a business, make more money and work flexible hours? But are you working longer hours, enjoying less free time and earning less money instead?

Does This Describe Your Life?

- You can’t afford to take time off. If you took time off, you wouldn’t be getting paid, and you can’t afford to take a week or two off without pay. You always feel like you need to be generating revenue, or doing something that will lay the groundwork to generate revenue.

- You are working weekends and holidays. A Sunday is the same as a Tuesday when you’re trying to meet project deadlines.

- You have been missing your kids’ sporting events and recitals, because you have clients’ appointments at the same time, and you cannot afford to miss out on the
revenue opportunities

This is vicious cycle - you believe you need to work all the time, because if you stop working, your revenue will dry up.

I experienced all of this first-hand. Back in the 1990’s I started doing consulting because I wanted to run my own business, be my own boss, and have flexible hours. Instead, I worked very long hours, worked every weekend, and had absolutely no free time. After a while, I was exhausted, and was considering not having my own business at all.

Eventually, I took some time off to think to restructure my business. I decided that when I went back to my business, I wanted to work flexible hours, take weekends off, be able
to go on vacation and have lots of time to spend with family and friends.

I realized that the only way I could have a profitable business and still enjoy flexible hours and quality of life was by creating multiple streams of income.

I will be teaching everything I have learned about multiplestreams of income — all of the techniques I’ve polished and skills I’ve honed — during the How To Profit From Information Products Teleseminar Series. Password Protection For Ebook

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Should you password protect an ebook that you are selling? I usually recommend to my clients to convert their ebooks to PDF, but not use password protection on them. Passwords can get lost, and they can inconvenience your customers. Also, I am not sure what program(s) you would use for the password protection, but e-book creation/protection packages require customers download and use that particular software, and that artificially decreases the size of your market to people who would actually be willing to do this.

Instead of password protection, here is what I recommend:

- Convert your e-book to PDF.

- Create an affiliate program for the e-book. People who know that they can earn money by using their affiliate link will use the affiliate link, instead of sharing the e-book free.

- Add your resources and links to the e-book. This way the buyer, or even someone who does get the e-book from the buyer, will be able to visit your web site, buy your other products, subscribe to your newsletter, etc.

How To Use Your Newsletter To Sell Books

Friday, October 20th, 2006

If you have a newsletter list with subscribers who are part of your target market, you should use it to sell your books. But how do you do that?
Sending a monthly message to your newsletter saying “Buy My Great Book!” is a waste of time, as more and more people will unsubscribe.

But, writing articles that highlight issues that your target market experiences, offering solutions to those issues, and tying the book to the solutions will results in more book sales every month.

Having X number of people on your newsletter list does not mean that all of them will run out and buy your book as soon as they hear about it. But keeping in touch with them, and showing them how the book can help them, while providing them with helpful information will help you get those sales.

Also, more and more people subscribe to the newsletter every month, thus giving the author the ability to share the information about the book with more and more people.

Many of the new people who have never heard of your book will not buy it immediately, but by keeping in touch with them through your newsletter you will get more and more of them to buy the book over time.

Your newsletter is also a great tool to sell other products that you might want to create (reports, seminars, teleseminars, audio, etc). This is something that I recommend to
my clients every single day.
