Should You Buy A List Or Grow Your Own List?

Friday, November 17th, 2006

When people start a business and need to grow their own mailing list, they ask whether they should buy a list or grow their own. I always recommend building your own mailing list instead of buying.

Building a list will take longer, but the people who subscribe to your list will be much more responsive and are more likely to become your customers down the road, which is what you want. Here are some tips to help you grow your list:

- Offer something valuable to your new subscribers as a gift to get more subscriptions. This can be a report or an e-book that you wrote.

- Feature newsletter subscription box prominently on your web site - use it on all pages of your web site.

- Write articles, use search engine optimization and start a blog to drive more people to your web site and subscribe to your newsletter.

How To Use Your Newsletter To Sell Books

Friday, October 20th, 2006

If you have a newsletter list with subscribers who are part of your target market, you should use it to sell your books. But how do you do that?
Sending a monthly message to your newsletter saying “Buy My Great Book!” is a waste of time, as more and more people will unsubscribe.

But, writing articles that highlight issues that your target market experiences, offering solutions to those issues, and tying the book to the solutions will results in more book sales every month.

Having X number of people on your newsletter list does not mean that all of them will run out and buy your book as soon as they hear about it. But keeping in touch with them, and showing them how the book can help them, while providing them with helpful information will help you get those sales.

Also, more and more people subscribe to the newsletter every month, thus giving the author the ability to share the information about the book with more and more people.

Many of the new people who have never heard of your book will not buy it immediately, but by keeping in touch with them through your newsletter you will get more and more of them to buy the book over time.

Your newsletter is also a great tool to sell other products that you might want to create (reports, seminars, teleseminars, audio, etc). This is something that I recommend to
my clients every single day.

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

I get a lot of e-mail from people who are in the process of starting a service business and need to get clients. Starting a business is a HUGE undertaking - you need to take care of finances, PR, sales, administrative tasks and much more. But you really NEED to drive clients to your business. Without clients, you business will not be able to exist for long.

Here is what you should start doing in order to drive more customers to your service buisness:

- Define your target market, people who want, need and can afford your services. Where can you meet these people?

- Create a web site with information about your products and services that would appeal to your target market

- Start an e-mail list, so that you can share tips with your target audience and collect their e-mail addresses for future marketing

- Start using search engine optimization and other marketing methods to drive traffic to your web site

Do you have more ideas for business owners just starting a service business?

How To Market And Stay True To Yourself

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Many clients have asked me the same question. They know that they need to get out there and market themselves in order to get more clients, but at the same time they want to stay true to who they are and how they work. They don’t want to be like a used car salesman, they want to be genuine. But at the same time, of course, they want to sell their products and services.

So, what can they do? First thing is first - they need to find out exactly who their target market is. These are the people you want, need and can afford their services.

Now they need to put together a web site to showcase their products and services to their target market and start building their mailing list and marketing. There are many marketing techniques, and they don’t require hard selling or not being genuine.

For example:

- How about a free report that you can give away to your new newsletter subscribers in order to build your list?

- How about writing articles and submitting the to article directories?

- How about search engine optimization to drive clients who are already interested in what you have to offer?

No one uses ALL marketing techniques all the time. I would recommend that you become very clear as to who your target market is, and start driving it to you list and your web site, using marketing techniques that you are comfortable with.

Another Way To Get More Newsletter Subscribers

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Publishing a newsletter on a regular basis is a great way to build relationships with your potential clients. The more targeted newsletter subscribers you have, the more people are exposed to your expertise and are able to become your clients.

Therefore, as a business owner, you must use different online marketing techniques to continuously grow your newsletter list.

One way to grow your list that many business owners overlook is by using pay-per-click search engines. With pay per click search engines you don’t have to do search engine optimization; rather, you pay for every click that is sent to your web site.

Last week in the forum at MarketingSalad.com I discussed how I use pay-per-click to get newsletter subscribers. Get access to that discussion, and much, much more at MarketingSalad.com

Here is what one of the members said about MarketingSalad.com:

“The forum is packed full of advice, tips and a wealth of information. Anything I want to know about online marketing I can either find the answers there or ask the question myself.

As a result of your advice on Search Engine Optimization I updated my web site and ever since I have been getting a lot of enquiries and even better, taken on several new clients!”

How To Get Coaching Clients Online

Monday, August 14th, 2006

I have taught quite a few coaches how to get more clients online. The first step for getting more coaching clients is defining your niche, or your target market.

Once you know who your target market is, you have three goals:

- Driving your target market to your web site

- Getting your target market to subscribe to your newsletter

- Keeping in touch and building relationships with your target market using your newsletter. This step will help you turn your newsletter subscribers into clients.

#2 is straightforward - you need to have a prominent newsletter subscribe box on your web site, and encourage your web site visitors to subscribe to your newsletter. The best way to do that is by offering something at no charge (a report, e-book or e-course) as a bonus to subscribers.

#3 can be accomplished by publishing useful, interesting newsletters on a regular basis.

This leaves us with #1, driving your target market to your web site. How can you accomplish that?

Here are a few different ways to do that:

- Online Networking. Network in groups that your target market participates in and mention your newsletter web address in your signature.

- Search Engine Optimization (or SEO). SEO is the process of modifying web page content and meta-information to improve the search engine ranking of the page. Successful search engine optimization will greatly increase the number of visitors that come to your web site since over 70% of people who are looking for products and services use search engines to locate them. Make sure that your web site is optimized for
search engines, so that your target market can find it.

- Business Blogging. Start a blog for your business and update it on a regular basis. A business blog is an excellent tool to toot your own horn, and let your target market know about your business. My business blog drives
newsletter subscribers and clients to my web site every single day.

Three Ways To Get More Newsletter Subscribers

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

When you create a product, you want to let as many people as possible know about it. After all, the more people know about your products, the more of them will be able to buy it, and the more money you will make. The best way to achieve that is byy having your own opt-in mailing list.

If you already have an opt-in list, here is how to drive more mailing list subscribers:

- Write articles and submit them to online article directories. Make sure that your resource box invites the readers to subscribe to your newsletter / offers a gift to subscribe.

- Use search engine optimization to optimize your web site and drive new newsletter subscribers.

- Blog and feature your newsletter subscribe box prominently on your blog.

How To Start Online Home Based Business

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

So you started a home based to work from home. How can you get customers to actually come and buy from you? Here are five tips to get you started:

- Get a Web Site for your Business. Getting a web site online is just like opening a store in the brick and mortar world. Even if your company provides a web site for you, get your own web site. It is going to be much easier to promote, get search engine traffic and get customers when you have your own, not a company-given web site.

- Make sure the Web Site is usable and search engine friendly. Many times a web site owner designs a web site that the owner likes. The problem is, the web site is very business owner-oriented, instead of being customer-oriented. Remember - it is not about you, it is about the customers. Ask a few people from your target market to test drive the web site for you, and to tell you what they liked/disliked about it.

This way you will know that your target customers like and are interested in using your web site.

- Start learning about Search Engines. You might not become a search engine specialist, but it is important to know how search engines work, and why they send more traffic to one web site, and less traffic to another. To get started, read the Basics of Search Engine Optimization article. For more in-depth information on getting search engine traffic to your web site, get Step by Step Search Engine Optimization Report.

- Get a Newsletter for your Web Site. When people come to your web site, you don’t want them to leave empty-handed and never return. So ask them to sign up for your newsletter. They might not buy from you on their first visit, but capturing their email address will help you keep in touch with them and market to them at a later date.

- Start a Link Exchange on your web site. Exchanging links with good, quality sites will help you get more traffic and search engine rankings. Avoid web sites that are full of banners and are not professional looking.
