Are You Doing Busy Work Or Taking Powerful Action?

For a while I have been interested in one question. Why do some business owners who get started in business at roughly the same time and do roughly the same things get very different results? Some become very successful and have clients beating down their door, while others are not happy with the way their business is going 3, 4 or even 5 years later.

Lately I have been watching how coaches are using social networking web sites and have noticed the same phenomenon. Some coaches have created a following and attracted crowds of fans and prospects almost immediately, while others haven’t received much of anything, even though all of these coaches are spending similar amounts of time on social networking web sites.

The coaches who have created a following and attracted many fans and prospects are taking powerful action that is a part of their bigger social networking plan. Others are just taking random actions: posting updates that don’t mean a lot, not interacting with others a lot, and not promoting their expertise.

Here is how the successful coaches have achieved their social networking goals in a short period of time and how you can do the same:

- Have Goals. Before starting to use social networking to promote their business, do your research. Find out how to use social networking and set social networking goals for your business. This way you are not just using social networking web sites randomly. You are using them to achieve your business goals.

- Know Whom You Want To Network With. Know the people you want to meet on social networking web sites, so that you can look for them and network with them specifically instead of connecting with people randomly. Doing this alone can dramatically cut down on time you spend on social networking, while still helping you achieve all of your goals.

- Be Consistent Throughout Different Social Networking Web Sites. If you use more than one social networking web site, have a consistent message, brand and image throughout all of them. You will meet many of the same people on different social networking web sites, so you don’t want to confuse them about what you do.

- Have A Social Networking Plan. If you want to get clients, create raving fans and be seen as an expert on social networking web sites, you must take consistent, powerful action. The easiest way to do that is to create a plan that outlines the actions you need to take, step-by-step.

As you can see, the difference between doing busy work and taking powerful action is huge. If you continue doing busy work, you will find yourself in the same place day after day, year after year. Start taking powerful action today by creating your social networking plan and you will be able to get

Interview With Kim Clausen

Kim Clausen and Linda Claire Puig are the two ladies behind the Done For You Givewaway Of The Century, where they are giving away real services and done-for-you products.

Today I am interviewing Kim about the giveaway and how it can help you with your business!

Biana: Your giveaway is such a great idea – how did you come up with the idea for it?

Kim: My colleague Linda Claire Puig and I wanted to offer a program that could show business owners the many services that were available to make their day to day operations easier. The giveaway was a great way to expose business owners to all the different services that are available and expose them to many professionals in the industry who could provide those services. I am always looking for service providers for my business and this list makes it so easy to get my work done too!

 

Biana: Please tell us more about the giveaway – what kind of giveaways are available to those who register?

Kim: There are numerous product and service offerings available in all quantities and price points ranging from $100 to several thousand dollars. Services such as ebook covers, bookkeeping services, ready made articles, blog set ups, writing services, ready made teleseminars and workshops, ebook creation, professional interviews, audio and video services, merchant accounts and back office set ups, and alot more. Nearly 30 service offerings – all different!

 

Biana: What are you hoping to achieve with the giveaway? How are you hoping to help you target market with it?

Kim: We want to give people a breath of fresh air with some free services actually done for them, given how hard we are all working right now, and everyone’s tighter cash flows. We also want them to be exposed to the many service providers that are available to help make doing business easier. And finally we want to give them a list of professional resources for when they need these services in the future.

 

Biana: What is your one favorite thing about the giveaway?

Kim: The response we are getting from the visitors, and the incredible feeling of good will. There is such a great energy around this giveaway because all the contributors are donating their actual time and products. We purposely created this to be a giveaway geared around relationship-building and not aggressive upselling. So many people have written us to tell how much they appreciate what we are doing, and how excited they are to win!

 

Biana: Can you share with us your top 3 tips for other business owners who may be considering creating their own giveaway?

Kim: Well, Linda and I are so well suited to do this together because we are all about quality and integrity. So that would be Number 1 – do a high quality, high integrity giveaway with great products and services that is targeted and has a clear purpose. Number 2 would be to give yourself plenty of time to plan so that you can recruit the finest in your industry – contributors and sponsors (like Biana). :-) Number 3 is to have a solid plan of implementation. We created a schedule for everything that needed to be coordinated, set a launch date, planned a promotion schedule, and strategized to get the most reach possible.

Should You Dump Your Newsletter?

With social networking becoming more and more popular, many of my clients are asking me whether they should ditch their newsletter and use social networking web sites instead. Here is an email I have received from a client (she is a life coach) recently:

“Biana, I have been using all of the social networking techniques we’ve been discussing recently, and I am seeing great results! I recently signed on two clients, whom I’ve met through Twitter.

Since I am getting such great results with social networking, I am wondering whether I need to continue my newsletter? Should I stop sending out my newsletter and concentrate on using social networking web sites to connect with my target market?”

This sounds great, doesn’t it? You can stop sending out your newsletter, and you can spend the extra time that you now have on getting more done on social networking web sites.

While it certainly sounds good, you shouldn’t do that. You should not get rid of your newsletter and spend the time that you gain from not publishing it on social networking web sites. Not sending out your newsletter is a bad business decision.

Social networking web sites and your newsletter both play very important, but different roles in your marketing plan. Your participation in social networking web sites helps you let your target market know about you and your business. It also helps you invite your target market to join your newsletter.

Your newsletter is the next stage of your marketing plan. It helps you build relationships with your subscribers and invite them to take the next step with you: buy a product, attend a teleseminar, etc.

As you can see, social networking and newsletters are two different pieces of your Online Marketing Plan. Social networking helps you introduce yourself to prospects in your target market. Your newsletter helps you continue building relationships with them and let them know about your offerings. If you do not have a newsletter, you have a huge piece missing in your Online Marketing Plan, which helps you turn people you meet on social networking web sites into clients and customers.

Five Steps To Success With Article Marketing

Some time ago a client had asked me a very interesting question. She said: “If you wanted to start creating web site andbuilding a list immediately and you could only use one online marketing technique, what would you do?”

“Article marketing” was my answer. Article marketing has been my favorite online marketing technique for a very long time. This is because article marketing can bring targeted traffic to your web site as soon as you start using it.

When I just started using article marketing, I saw immediate results. First, I saw increased traffic to my web site from articles that I had posted in article directories. After some time, my articles started getting reprinted on other people’s web sites, blogs and newsletters. This generated even more newsletter subscribers and clients from exactly the same articles.

How do you get started with article marketing? Here is a 5-Step Plan to help you get started with using article marketing for promoting your business, products and services:

Understand The Goal Of Article Marketing

Any time you take action you need to know exactly why you are doing it and what results you are expecting from it. With article marketing, your goal is to start a conversation with your potential customers, to let them know about who you are and what you do and to ask them to take the next step in this conversation — visit your web site, subscribe to your newsletter and buy.

Find Good Topics For Your Articles

To start the conversation with your potential customers (and have them respond!), they need to be interested in having this conversation. If they are not interested in a topic, they will drop the discussion before it even starts.

How do you get them interested in the conversation? By writing articles on topics that they are interested in!

Write The Actual Article

Now that you know what topics you want to use, pick one and write an article on it. Once your article is ready, let it sit for a day or two, and then come back to it to make revisions and changes. Whose Business Are You Running?

Last week I posted this note on Twitter: “Don’t use a marketing technique just because someone else is using it. You are not running their business, you are running YOURS!”

This post has generated a tremendous number of comments from people on Twitter and Facebook. When business owners see their colleagues getting results from certain marketing techniques they decide to use the same techniques in their own business. However, many times the techniques don’t turn out as successful for them, so business owners are left disappointed and unhappy.

Why does this happen? Many times business owners see others using a marketing technique effectively, so they jump in and start using the technique without proper evaluation and planning. As a result, the technique does not work for them and they are not able to get clients using it. Before starting to use a marketing technique, spend some time on evaluating how it is going to fit into your overall marketing plan.

Here are three reasons why a marketing technique that others are using may not be working for you and how to correct this:

#1: The marketing technique you are trying to use isn’t helping you reach your target market and isn’t bringing in clients as a result

For example, let’s say you are a dating coach. You have a colleague who is a business coach and who has been gaining a ton of clients by speaking at many Chamber Of Commerce meetings. You try to speak at the Chamber Of Commerce meetings to bring in clients, but are getting no takers.

This is happening because people who go to Chamber of Commerce meetings are in a business coach’s target market, but not in a dating coach’s target market.

How to correct this: Speaking is a great technique to promote your business. Look to speak at meetings for groups/associations/chambers for your target market and you will start seeing results!

#2: You are not using the marketing technique effectively and are not seeing the results others are seeing from using the same marketing technique

For example, I see many coaches using article marketing and trying to immediately get coaching clients with it. Truth is, it is very hard to convert someone who has just read your article for the first time into a coaching client. It is much easier to convert this article reader into a newsletter subscriber.

How to correct this: Instead of concentrating on immediately getting a client from a marketing technique, concentrate on getting newsletter subscribers and then using your newsletter to turn your subscribers into clients. You will see much better results this way.

#3: You do not have all the pieces of puzzle. Many times business owners hear about someone else using a marketing technique effectively, and they jump in and start using it without any kind of a plan

Just using a marketing technique is not enough. You need to know what results to expect, how to track them and what infrastructure you need in your business in order to get these results.

For example, if you are using article marketing, you need to know what types of articles to write, how to structure an effective resource box, how to use the article to get newsletter subscribers, etc.

How to correct this: Before starting to use a marketing technique, get all of the pieces of the puzzle. Do research to learn exactly how the marketing technique is used, what kind of results to expect and how to apply it effectively for your business.

Remember, you are running your business, not someone else’s! Before jumping into using a marketing technique do research to make sure that you know how to apply it so it will work for you! Get the
