How to Network Online to Get Customers

Social networking is a great way to get to know your potential clients, people in your target market and other business owners. Networking can help you find new resources, learn how other people do business and create lasting relationships.

And the best part about that is that you can do all of that online. Every day, thousands of business owners log on to social networking communities, web sites, mailing lists and chat forums to learn, exchange information, network and get more business.

Want to join them? Here are three simple rules to get you started in online networking for fun and profit:

- Learn the Rules. Each networking list and message board has its own rules on what is acceptable and what isn’t. Posting regulations range from restrictions on discussion topics (where only business topics are allowed, for example) to guidelines governing the general behavior of posters (for instance, no arguments, flames or name calling) to no rules at all. Make sure you follow the rules of the particular board or community, when networking there.

- Network on a Consistent Basis. Many business owners I know network only once in a while, and networking doesn't produce good results for them. When you network consistently, many more people remember you, and, thus, are able to refer people to you and use your services.

- Find networking groups that help you reach your goals. I usually recommend that my clients join a few groups that have members of their industry or profession and other business owners. These groups help them learn how their colleagues work on their business and market and promote it. These groups are also great to share resources - when you need a logo designer or a business coach, you have a group of trusted people to turn to.

Then, join more groups where the members are actually in your target market. Being a member of these groups, and contributing to them on a regular basis, will help you become known as an expert in your field, and gain more clients. Networking with members of your target market will also give you ideas for new products, and insights into your target market's unique needs and wants.

Have fun! Networking is a fun and educational process of meeting and building relationships with other business owners online.
