Define Your Target Market

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Many coaches, consultants and other service professionals have told me that they work with everybody. They feel that the easiest way to market is to market to everyone. If they define a target market, they told me, it will become much harder to market and get clients.

The truth is exactly the opposite. When you define a target market, it actually becomes easier to market your business. This is because when you have a target market and market to a specific group of people you are going to market to fewer people, but get many more clients. Let’s look at how to make your marketing easier by defining your target market:

Blogging For Life Coaches

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Many life coaches have asked me how to start a blog to promote their life coaching business online and get clients. Here is how:
First, you will need a blog. I recommend using blogging software that is available at wordpress.org. The software is available at no charge and it is very easy to use and is very customizable.

Once you have a blog, decide where in your life coaching marketing funnel it is going to fit. I recommend using your blog to attract search engine and other traffic and turn that traffic into newsletter subscribers. Make sure you know exactly where the blog fits into your marketing and what kind of results you are expecting from it.
If you don’t know why you are using a marketing technique and how you will benefit from using it, there is no reason to have it in your marketing plan.

Once you know where the blog fits into your life coaching marketing funnel, decide on the topics you want to post on. Since you are blogging to attract your target market to your blog and to your business, the best topics will be those that are of interest to your target market.

Now go ahead and start blogging! Take a look at my Business Blogging Articles at https://www.avocadoconsulting.com/articles/ (scroll to Business Blogging) for more blogging tips for life coaches.

A Good Name For Life Coaches?

Monday, October 15th, 2007

If you are a life coach, should you call yourself a life coach? Or should you find a different title for yourself?
I think you should call yourself what is comfortable for you AND what would get you the best response from potential clients.

I have worked with many life coaches, who became “Business Coaches”, “Relationship Coaches” or “Career Coaches” as they defined their niche and decided who they wanted to work with.

Another thing that we can try doing is talking about what we do in terms of clients’ benefits. When you outline what you do in terms of clients’ benefits, more of your potential clients will be interested in what you have to offer. You will get more clients as a result.

Instead of saying “I am a life coach” you can say “I help my clients find the job that they really want.”

Potential clients respond better when you describe what’s in it for them instead of just telling them that you are a life coach.

How To Follow Up And Get People To Buy

Monday, September 24th, 2007

So you went to a networking event and met three people who are in your target market, and who can really use your services. Or you just attended an online networking event and want to keep in touch with a few people you met there. Or a colleague introduced you to a potential customer who you would love to work with, but who isn’t calling you back.

What should you do? How much should you follow up with these people? And, most importantly, how should you follow up with them to ensure a positive response?

If these people are in your target market, but they haven’t expressed specific interest in hiring you now, I would not spend too much time on following up with them. I meet dozens (sometimes more) target customers every week, so it is impossible to keep following up with all of them until they get back to me.

What I do is follow up once with information about my newsletter and the gift they will receive when they subscribe to my newsletter. Subscribing to my newsletter is a no-brainer for them – there is no charge to subscribe and they receive a gift when they do.

It is much easier to convince a prospect to subscribe to a newsletter than to buy your services. When you meet people in your target market, work on getting to that first step, having them to subscribe to your newsletter. Selling them your products and services will come later.

Getting potential customers to subscribe to your newsletter is great for you – now you are able to follow up and build relationships with potential customers without having to follow up with each person individually. As you send out your newsletter and build relationships, potential customers get to know you and are much more willing to buy your services and products.

Following up using a newsletter is extremely effective. A big part of my business comes from people who have been my newsletter subscribers for some time.

I recommend that you start a newsletter and use your newsletter as your automatic follow up program. This way you can follow up with hundreds, or even thousands of prospects, all at once.

How To Get More Newsletter Subscribers

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

How Can I Get MORE Newsletter Subscribers? This is one of the most popular questions I receive from coaches, consultants and other service business owners.

The best way to get more people to subscribe to your newsletter is by offering a free gift that they can receive when they subscribe.

Everyone likes free gifts, so when you offer a free gift to your subscribers you are immediately going to get more people to subscribe.

When people first learn about your newsletter, they are not sure if they want to subscribe or not. But they will definitely subscribe if they really want to receive the gift you are offering.

You want the people who learn about the gift to immediately say: “I want this!” and subscribe to your newsletter, so that they can get the gift. Therefore, the gift should be on a topic that is of great interest to your target market.

A few months ago I taught members of my mentoring program how to create a newsletter gift that will get you many newsletter subscribers. You can get the recording of that call at https://www.marketingsalad.com/triple-newsletter.html

Target Market For Your Business

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Almost every time I talk to clients about defining a target market, they stall, and they stall for some time. Many business owners want to delay defining their target market for as long as possible. This is because defining a target market means committing to working with a smaller group of people. Business owners are afraid to commit to working with a smaller group of people, because they are afraid they will miss out on all the clients they will not be able to work with anymore….

How Coaches Get Clients By Referrals

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Do you need more coaching clients? How about getting clients by referrals?

To get clients through referrals you should create reciprocal referral relationships with other non-competing professionals who work with your target market. This way, you can send referrals to each other, and get more business. Having a strong referral network is one of the best ways to get clients for a service business.

For example, let’s say you are a business coach and your target market are business owners who run small and medium size businesses. You should connect with other business professionals that small and medium size businesses employ, such as web designers, accountants, virtual assistants and others. As you build relationships with them, you will be able to refer business to each other.

The best way to find professionals to build referral relationships with is through networking. This can be local networking – through your Chamber of Commerce and other organization. Or it can be something I have used with a lot of success, online networking. You can network online with professionals, get to know them and build relationships with
them.

Today and tomorrow I am hosting an online networking event, during which I do “business matchmaking” – I help participants find referral partners.
